January
Full Moon 3rd, called Wolf Moon. 3rd Earth is at nearest point to the sun at 147,000,000km. 1st-4th Quadrantid Meteor Shower - best night 3rd/4th, but full moon will spoil it. Orion best seen South between 7.30pm-11.00pm. Jupiter is brightest 'star' in the evening from 8pm. On 27th - Moon passes by the Seven Sister star cluster
February
Full Moon 1st called Snow Moon or Storm Moon. Orion best seen - now due South between 6.00pm-10.00pm. Seven Sisters is to the right of Orion. Gemini seen as a rectangle to the upper left of Orion with. Jupiter is brightest 'star' in the evening from 7pm. On 18th - Venus, Mercury, Saturn and Moon very close together low down after sunset.
March
Full Moon 3rd called Worm Moon or Crow Moon. Last good chance to see Orion & Gemini till next November. Good time to see Leo - backward ‘?’ under the Great Bear which will be high after 8pm. 21st–Spring Equinox (sun will rise due East & set due West. 12 hrs of day). Jupiter is brightest 'star' in the evening as soon as it gets dark. 7th - Find Neptune (with binoculars) right next to Venus and Saturn to the left of Venus.
April
Full Moon 2nd called Pink Moon or Seed Moon. Final sightings of Orion & Seven Sisters in Taurus until October. Best time to see Leo - backward ‘?’ under the Great Bear which will be high up. Lyrid meteor shower around the 22-23rd. Last chance to see Jupiter, in front of Gemini the Twins.
May
Full Moon 1st and 31st called Milk Moon or Flower Moon. Around the 13th, a shower called the Alpha Scorpiids will be seen; 20 meteors per hour. 18th - moon and Venus next to each other.
June
Full Moon 30th called Strawberry Moon or Rose Moon. Pluto is at the closest point to the earth on the 28th; just 4,674,000,000 km away. 21st Mid-Summer Day (Longest hours of daylight in northern hemisphere). 19th - Venus next to Praesepe Star cluster
July
Full Moon 29th, called Hay Moon or Thunder Moon. 7th - Earth is at farthest point from the sun at 152,000,000km. 4th, 15th -31st Delta Aquarid Meteor Shower - best night 28th/29th. Best time to see Mercury around 27th, low in the West. 9th - Venus very close to bright star, Regulus.
August
Full Moon 28th, called Corn Moon, Grain Moon or Red Moon. Around 22nd 1st -17th Perseid Meteor Shower - best nights 11th to 13th - up to 100 shooting stars an hour this year. The Moon will be at first quarter phase so it won't spoil the view too much. Best time is in the morning of the 12th from 4 am, the Moon would have set.
September
Full Moon 26th called Harvest Moon. 22nd - Autumn Equinox (the sun will rise due East & set due West. 12 hrs of day). Venus now visible in the evening low in the West.
October
Full Moon 26th called Hunters Moon or Blood Moon. Orion & Taurus now visible from 11pm. Can't miss Venus now in the West after sunset.
November
Full Moon 24th called Beaver Moon or Frost Moon. 15th–19th Leonid Meteor Shower - best night 17th. Orion & Seven Sisters in Taurus visible from 10.00pm.
December
Full Moon 24th called Cold Moon or Long Night Moon. Orion & Seven Sisters in Taurus visible from 8.30pm. 9th-15th. Geminid Meteor Shower - best night 13th/14th. Bright meteors, some hit Earth. 21st-Mid-Winter Day (Shortest hrs of daylight in N. hemisphere).
